A book club is a reading group that is composed of a number of readers who participate in a regular discussion of various books. Traditionally, a book club consisted of several members who met each month and talked about specific works. However, with the advent of email and web forums, a new form of book clubs has emerged; online book clubs. Both online and offline traditional book clubs offer readers participation in spirited discussions. One advantage of traditional book clubs is the fact that all members are in the same room and this makes for a much more intimate experience. Because of their relatively small size, control over what book titles to be read or discussed is typically the responsibility of each member. It has to be remembered too that a traditional book club has its disadvantages. One of these is the fact that such a book club is difficult to organize and maintain, especially if it meets regularly. Timing and location are also other factors if members have busy schedules. Their small size also means that diversity in views and perspectives is also limited.
On the other hand, an online book club, due to the vastness of the web and the variety online allows a book club to flourish. It is now possible to find book clubs that have specialized genre or interest. An online book club is more convenient as well. Obvious disadvantages of these book clubs include the loss of a personal discussion along with the social interaction that makes traditional book club experiences very enjoyable. How is a well-structured book club organized? Usually, many of such clubs share a meal or a snack while they meet. A good book club will give people time to socialize in the first 15 or 20 minutes. This can be enhanced by having some wine or soft drinks while people chat. It also allows the guests to catch up on their lives. Because social time is so appealing, it is appropriate that about 30 minutes be spent in casual conversation. The book can be discussed over, say, dessert and should last anywhere between 45 minutes and one hour. If you will be discussing, say fictional work, use general questions to initiate the conversation. What is unique about the book setting? What themes are emphasized in the novel? Do the characters seem believable? Can you relate with them? How do they evolve throughout the story? Giving forethought to what questions can be anticipated will give the book club an exciting touch that will keep the members connected.
